Peaches and Shears

During "Ask the Lord Time" in my Evangelism Class (see last post), a new student, Nick, from Plymouth, Indiana, had a strange picture that came to his mind -- two words: "Peaches and Shears."

He felt rather silly sharing this with the rest of the class, but had the courage the blurt it out, adding, "I know this seems crazy. . ."

Later in the afternoon, a few classmates were walking in a shopping mall, when one of them nudged Nick and said, "Hey, there's your shears!" They were standing in front of a hair salon.

"Why don't you go inside and see if you find the peaches?"

So, Nick, stepped inside and asked, "Is there someone named Peaches here?"

"Yep," said one of the workers, "She's right over there."

Nick's eyes bugged out, "REALLY???"

He went over to the bewildered hair sylist and explained how an unusual prompting during prayer time led him to her. "Is there anything I can pray for you about?"

Peaches burst into tears, and wrapped her arms around the surprised ministerial student.

A co-worker remarked, "See, I told you God was powerful!"

Peaches was at a major crossroad in her life, and facing some significant moral decisions. Nick ended up praying with her, and she went home with renewed faith.

Nick came back to class rejoicing! God works in mysterious ways!

What a wonderful experience last week in Evangelism class. Tuesday's evangelism experience is one that I will never forget. Just as one of the students (Daryl) said "All we did was pray for 40 minutes - seeking God - and we saw amazing things happening." If we could earnestly seek Him everyday like this - this world would be turned upside down. Thanks again for this incredible blessing.

    Mark, praying for your wife.

This whole thing is a mind blowing experience. Who could have thought up such a thing? I believe in the power of God, but I would never had imagined that all this could have happened. I made a comment that the Spirit of God was in our experience. What I mean is that He manifested Himself in the situations we encountered. Is it possible that some of what we saw was our own making? And that, in order to increase our faith, God created what we saw? Kinda like, which came first, the chicken or the egg? However it happened, it happened mightily and my faith was increased. Thanks for the experience Mark.

God wants to speak to us. As one who was a part of this class, I have a fresh energy and passion to see God work....which means I need to quiet my heart before the Lord and LISTEN. I come before the Lord and do so much talking (no comments from the peanut gallery on that one!) and if I were to be quiet for just a few minutes, God could get a word in and direct my path! There is a hurting world out there that needs Jesus. Lord, help me to be faithful to listen and go so they can know your love as I do.

  4. It is about listening to God's voice. Sort of like Mary said about Jesus, "Whatever he tells you to do, do it."

Mark, i have had alot of time to think about last week. Peaches and Shears, yeah Peaches and Shears! Can God really work that way? It's amazing how we, I for that matter put God the Creator of the Heavons and the earth in a box, we say that's not how God works, that's not the way He does it. Last week has my perceptions of How I view God, how I view others, how i view myself were forever changed. I look and talk to people in a whole new way, even my sense of smell has changed, everthing smells Peachy! For me Flame was and is a movement, a movemnet to encourage us to lead others to look, listen and yes even smell, cause my God is at work in the body of Christ! Thank you for your obedience to the Holy Spirit. Abbas Child Tim Dumont

After telling our congregation about our experiences at Flame including "peaches and shears" and praying over five pastors and the response from one, several men have come to me asking to establish an evangelism small group. We will begin with 6 to eight men of various ages right after Thanksgiving.

  8. Mark,
I had the opportunity to fill in for our Pastor while he went back to Plymouth, IN for his daughters wedding and a little fellowship time with the Plymouth brethren a couple weeks ago. I shared a couple of the experiences we had in your class especially "Peaches and Shears". I am really amazed at the impact this had on our congregation. Not only did God work through our class, but his work continued as I shared this story. There were several people that made commitments to make our community their mission field that day. I ask that everyone pray for these people and that it will result in a revival here in this community. As everyone else has already noted - Great Class!
