Revitalize Your Church

After a brief stint with the Presbyterians , and some soul searching in the Mississippi wilderness, Pastor Favre decided to come back to town and start a new church down the street -- much to the dismay of his original congregation.

This great leadership thought was in a recent article by Phil Stevenson in Expanding Wave: Brett Favre is one of the best quarterbacks to ever play in the National Football League. He currently plays for the New York Jets. Running back Leon Washington, when attempting to express the impact Favre has on the Jets, said, “You get into the huddle and you look into No. 4’s eyes, and you know you are going to have a chance to win” (USA Today, 11.19.08). Let me tweak this just a little bit: Less than two minutes in the game. The Packers are down by two. They get into the huddle and look into No. 12's eyes and say, "Uh Oh."

Here's an idea -- how about if the Packers make a trade with the Jets for Brett Favre?

Last night, Lambeau Field was Mr. Rogers' neighborhood! I'm glad to see him have a great debut -- after all the unwarranted flack the poor fellow's received. I was glad also to see Favre have a great game as well. I suppose one can root for both the Packers and the Jets.

After much deliberation, and despite loud protests by the congregation, the church board voted to trade Pastor Favre to the Presbyterians.

Also, Brett's dismal performance in the frigid championship game at Lambeau makes me wonder if the gipper still has it in him for the long haul. He had a wonderful season -- with a few horrible moments. At this point, he's still great -- but wouldn't it be better for him to go out in greatness than to continue until he is booed off the field? What if things unravel? How do you tell a legend that he's washed up? 2. Bring him back, but let Rogers start: That won't go over very well in Packerland. I cannot imagine Brett as a benchwarmer. If they choose this option, poor Rogers will have a huge target on his back. Every mistake he makes will...

The flags are half mast in Hayward today -- the gipper has retired. My 19 year old son, Ryan, said that he has never seen a Packer game without Brett Favre at the helm. It's sure going to be different now, and poor Rogers has some huge shoes to fill. After pondering over what made Favre such a great champion, here are a few sentimental observations: 1) He Showed up to Play Every Sunday. Regardless of what was happening in his life (i.e. his father's death and his wife's cancer), he still found a way to get to the game on time. 2) He Played Through the Hurts. I've watched just about every Packer game since Favre's debut. I've seen him clobbered, hammered, hamstrung, smashed, and boggled. Yet, Brett kept getting back on his feet again. Remember the year when he played half a season with a broken thumb? Somehow, the desire for victory was far greater than the physical pain. 3) He Took Risks and Made Plenty of Mistakes. We're thrilled to hear that Packer great, Brett Favre, was selected this week as Sports Illustrated 2007 Sportsman of the Year . In response to this honor, Favre said, "You do that by setting an example, by doing things the right way. I've always shown up, I've always been prepared, I practice every day." "I practice hard. I study. No matter what happens on the field, I never point blame at anybody else. Everything I do comes back to leadership, the example I want to set." So. . . how does that perspective apply to pastoral ministry?

Favre throws 420th TD -- to tie Marino's record. Pack beats SD -- 31-24 Green Bay is 3-0, taking sole possesion of first place in NFC north. Sweet! Watching the Packers has become fun again!

In a outstanding performance today against the Giants, Brett Favre became the winningest quarterback in football history! Congratulations Brett -- for playing hard and sticking with it -- through thick and thin!

Today, Brett Favre passed Dan Marino as the NFL's leader in passing completions. If he keeps going, he might beat Blanda's record too -- most interceptions!
