Good Leadership

Leadership, particularly that of a pastor, is really not tied to one's ability to do great things but to mobilize people, in the context of community, to do more than they could have done alone--more than they ever could have dreamed possible.

-- a quote from Bob Roberts at Glocal Trekker

Leadership is the ability to motivate, appreciate, activate, repect, enlighten, parent and especially to love each and everyone in your charge. Great leaders get their reward by helping others achieve their goals, not wanting all the glory for themselves.

Coming from a secular leadership role, the job is much the same. A good leader is know by whether those following are passionate about what he (or she...not gender biased here) is passionate about. In ministry our passion is for Jesus and servanthood of mankind. I guess we ought to ask whether our people are passionate about that...and we will have our answer about how good of a leader we might (or might not) be.

Mark, I have organized the Wesleyan Men to assist selling Christmas trees for the big brothers and sisters this Saturday from 6 to 9 pm. We are going to work in pairs and ask each person who comes to buy a tree to accept a prayful blessing from us. We will also ask if they have any special needs to be prayed for. We will have a wesleyan handout for those who express interest. I think this will be a great evangelistic experiment ( also it is my answer to the post course project).

  5. Mark, I concur with you on Pastoral Leadership and Bob's quote here. Our best leadership guidelines comes from Ephesians 4:11-16. Our "job" is to equip and mobilize people for the "work of service" and as you stated to "do more than they could have done alone."
I would interject that motivation of our people is also a key element in this process. To motivate people to pull something out of themselves that they didn't know was there. .to raise the bar. . .to capitalize on their greatest talent.
Within the volunteer revolution of our churches, I believe this is our greatest need. . .Leadership! Amen!
