Wesley on Preaching
In the Conference Minutes of 1744, John Wesley was asked, "What is the best method of preaching?" He responded:
1. To Invite
2. To Convince
3. To Offer Christ
4. To Build Up, and do this (in some measure) in every sermon
If This Is Not A Place. . .
If this is not a place where tears are understood, Then where shall I go to cry? And if this is not a place where my spirit can take wings, Then where shall I go to fly? I don't need another place for trying to impress you With just how good and virtuous I am. I don't need another place for always being on top of things; Everybody knows that it's a sham. I don't need another place for always wearing smiles, Even when it's not the way I feel. I don't need another place to mouth the same old platitudes; Everybody knows that it's not real. So if this is not a place where my questions can be asked, Then where shall I go to seek? And if this is not a place where my heart cry can be heard, Where, tell me where, shall I go to speak? For chronological order I think I'd switch #2 and #3 around - - - but then, what do I know, I'm no John Wesley!!!

WESLEY PRACTICED WHAT HE PREACHED
I had the opportunity to visit Wesley's Chapel in England. He took preaching so seriously that he had it build actually round, with the sanctuary on the bottom and living quarters upstairs. In the middle upstairs was a little hallway with two windows, one where you could see the pulpit, the other the congregation. When rookie pastors would preach there, Wesley would go back and forth from window to window critiquing the speaker.
